What we do - Drama

Calling the Shots first drama was 'Stray' in 1998, a film short made in collaboration with the young homeless in Bristol.

CTS have gone on to develop an original approach to producing quality drama with non-professionals, community groups and young people.

Our unique mentoring style was recognised by the BBC in 2003 when they asked us to run Mini Masterpieces and subsequently three seasons of BBC3 New Talent shorts.

BBC New Talent

BBC3 recognised our track record in discovering and supporting new talent by commissioning Calling The Shots to produce 3 x 3 minute dramas by new filmmakers in 2004.

All the films were shot on location in Bristol.

We were re-commissioned by BBC New Talent in 2005 and 2006.

Mini Masterpieces

Mini Masterpieces is our flagship talent development programme and runs alongside the Encounters Festival in Bristol every November.

New filmmakers are asked to pitch ideas to an industry panel in early October and then to develop and shoot their films in the week of the festival.   The four 3 minute films are then premiered.    Part of the deal is that the successful crews get a full expenses-paid trip to the festival and a chance to network with distributors and industry decision makers.
